Divisional Focus

The Division of Nuclear Medicine in the Department of Radiological Sciences consists of the Nuclear Medicine Clinic and the Molecular Imaging Research Laboratories.

The Division faculty includes Dr. Barry Shulkin and Dr. Scott Snyder. Drs. Kaste, McCarville, Coleman, and Miller assist in the interpretation of routine clinical nuclear imaging studies as a function of their commitment to diagnostic imaging.

In April 2007, St. Jude installed a new state-of-the-art cyclotron for the production of radioactive drugs used in a medical imaging procedure called positron emission tomography (PET). The cyclotron chemistry facility is unique in its dedication to exploring the diagnostic and therapeutic contributions of nuclear and molecular imaging for understanding and managing catastrophic diseases of childhood (Please see video).

The PET scan is a diagnostic tool that uses a type of radioactive material to measure biologic processes as they occur in the body. The processes that can be measured include blood flow, tumor growth rate, and the action of chemotherapy drugs. Therefore, PET scans play a large role in the diagnosis and treatment of disease.

The focus of research in the Nuclear Medicine Division is the development of new PET imaging drugs and new methods for using existing radioactive drugs for PET. We currently produce two radioactive drugs for imaging in the Nuclear Medicine Clinic and another four radioactive drugs for basic research purposes.

Education opportunities include a summer program through the Pediatric Oncology Education program, as well as postdoctoral fellows.

As we move forward toward diagnosing, managing, and finding cures for childhood diseases, the Nuclear Medicine Division will continue to develop cutting edge research to advance the capabilities of nuclear imaging for the children and families of St. Jude.
