The six remaining contestants from the television show Nashville Star took a break from the competition to visit families at St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital on April 8. The contestants toured the world’s premier research center for catastrophic childhood diseases and then performed an acoustic show to entertain the patients.

“It’s wonderful to see the children,” said Nashville Star finalist George Canyon. “They’re so resilient. All they see is that [their illness] is a hurdle they have to get over. They see all the happy stuff and sometimes as adults, we’re guilty of not picking out the happier things and just see the negatives.”

Footage of the contestants' visit to St. Jude was shown on the April 17 broadcast on USA Network at 10 p.m. EDT.

Nashville Star is a talent search reality television series centered on the hunt for the next country music superstar. The show features live performances by contestants, who are judged by industry professionals and the television viewing audience. The winner will receive a recording contract with Sony Music Nashville.

The show also features behind-the-scenes drama and humor that develops between the finalists while living together in a Nashville house for the duration of the competition. Of the thousands who originally auditioned for the show, 20 were selected by the show’s premier.  Of those 20, six still remained when they came to visit St. Jude: George Canyon of Nova Scotia, Canada; Brad Cotter of Auburn, Ala.; Jennifer Hicks of Nashville, Tenn., Brent Keith of Blanchester, Ohio (Keith was voted off on the April 10 episode); Matthew Lindahl of Snellville, Ga.; and Lance Miller of Fairfield, Ill.

The group wasn’t the first of the Nashville Star cast to visit the hospital. Last Christmas, 2003 Nashville Star winner Buddy Jewell came to St. Jude to hand out gifts to the children that were purchased by donors through’s St. Jude Wish List.

In conjunction with the St. Jude visit, the Nashville Star contestants hosted a block party fund-raiser for St. Jude on April 12 at the Nashville house where they are living. Country Cares partner station, The Big 98, WSIX, broadcast live from the event.
