The clinical staff members at St. Jude encourage and expect patients and families to be active participants in their care. During all phases of the stem cell transplant process, emphasis is placed on educating patients and family members about the treatment and supportive care required.
This educational process begins with the initial consultation visit during which the policies of the Transplant Unit, and the general procedures of stem cell transplant are explained.
The consent conference focuses on the research issues.
Before the patient is discharged, our clinical nurse specialist reviews all matters pertaining to outpatient care. These include medications and outpatient administration of total parenteral nutrition (TPN) or intravenous (IV) medications. In addition, the clinical nutritionist and clinical pharmacist will frequently meet with the family to educate them about the medications and nutritional issues.
