Why St. Jude? Academic Programs Office (APO)

Dedicated Staff

St. Jude’s Academic Programs Office is dedicated to ensuring that, as one of several hundred clinical and research trainees who come for training each year, you will receive the maximum benefit from your time spent here.

The Science

Translational research is the most prominent and the most unique of several attractions at St. Jude to those interested in the biomedical sciences. St. Jude patients are housed on, and nearby, the same campus as researchers and clinicians, making it possible for research to be applied quickly, "bench to bedside." St. Jude has a rich history of scientific breakthroughs, such as raising the survival rates for children with leukemia from four percent to 80 percent and performing the first successful bone marrow transplant for sickle cell disease. For current research, see our Scientific Report and our news section. The research resources available to you as a St. Jude trainee are unsurpassed.

Outstanding Faculty

St. Jude offers a rich intellectual environment for education and training. Presently St. Jude employs more than 200 faculty members, nearly 300 postdoctoral fellows, and more than 50 clinical fellows. You may have the opportunity to work closely with world-renowned senior faculty members.

State-of-the-Art Facilities

The resources at St. Jude are unsurpassed. See our section on Research Resources, for more information.

Independent Funding

Because of the funds raised by ALSAC (American Lebanese Syrian Associated Charities), St. Jude is not as limited by economic constraints to quite the same degree as many academic centers. ALSAC exists solely to raise and provide the funds necessary to operate and maintain St. Jude Children's Research Hospital.

Independent Affiliations

St. Jude is in partnership with local and international colleges, universities and hospitals, making it possible to offer internships and graduate training at St. Jude. The most active affiliations are with The University of Tennessee College of Medicine and College of Graduate Health Sciences, The University of Memphis Graduate School, Rhodes College and Le Bonheur Children’s Medical Center.

Lectures & Conferences

A variety of further educational experiences is available through a series of lectures, forums and training conferences, such as the Cancer Biology Forum, Ethics in Research, and the Friday Noon Seminar series.

Financial Benefits

St. Jude offers an exceptional benefits package to postdoctoral fellows including health, dental and vision insurance; group life insurance; liability insurance; worker’s compensation; long-term disability insurance; a professional development account; paid holidays; paid vacation plus two personal days per year; paid sick leave; and a 403(b) Retirement Plan.

Rich Memphis Culture

Memphis, the metropolitan hub of a five-state area known as the Mid-South, offers something for everyone. Memphis is the Home of the Blues and the Birthplace of Rock and Roll.
