Tennis pros take the court for St. Jude

February means tennis time in Memphis as the Regions Morgan Keegan Championship and the Cellular South Cup tennis tournament takes to the court this week to benefit St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.

Some of tennis' top players will come to the Racquet Club of Memphis to compete for RMK and CSC titles. James Blake, currently the No. 5 singles player in the world, heads a strong field that includes former champion Andy Roddick (No. 6) and defending 2006 champion Tommy Haas (No. 12).

On the ladies side, five-time Grand Slam Champion Venus Williams will look to add a third Cellular South Cup Championship to her career as she competes against 2006 champion Sofia Arvidsson and Samantha Stossur, half of the world’s No. 1 doubles team.

“We at St. Jude are very excited about this week’s tournament,” said David L. McKee, chief operating officer for ALSAC, the fundraising organization for St. Jude. “Not only because of the quality of the competition that the tournament draws but for what it means to the children being treated at St. Jude. The support given to the hospital by the tournament and the Racquet Club helps ensure that our doctors and scientists can continue to pursue cures for the deadly diseases that strike children.”

Since 1993, the tournament has helped raise more than $3 million for the hospital.
