While You're in Memphis

Patient Services assists families with transportation, lodging and meals. When Patient Services (901-595-4501) is closed, staff members in Patient Registration (901-595-4565) or Security (901-595-4444) can assist you with these services. (From outside Memphis, dial toll-free 1-866-2ST-JUDE and the last four digits of the department you are calling.) You should direct all questions about St. Jude policies for help with patient travel, lodging and meals to Patient Services. This department is located on the plaza (basement) level of the Patient Care Center.

After Hours Identification

If you come to St. Jude on weekends, holidays or after 8 pm on weekdays, you should stop at the Patient Care Center lobby desk or the Danny Thomas Research Center lobby desk. A security officer will issue you a temporary ID badge. By obtaining and wearing the badge, you help Security keep you and your family safe.

Blood Donor Center Parent Information

The Blood Donor Center, located on the first floor of the Patient Care Center, is responsible for collecting and providing the hospital with platelets and other blood products necessary for our patient’s care.

Cellular Telephones, BlackBerry Devices & Walkie-Talkies

Cellular phones, walkie-talkies and BlackBerryTM devices can cause problems with sensitive machines needed to test and treat your child.

Chapel

A nondenominational chapel is located on the first floor of the Patient Care Center (near the south waiting area).

Check Cashing / Automated Teller Machines (ATMs)

You will not be able to cash personal checks in Memphis without having an account at a Memphis bank. Money orders, cashier’s checks, and Social Security checks should be taken to the Patient Services office on the plaza level of the Patient Care Center.

Financial and Legal Matters

When you join the St. Jude family, our staff strives to lighten the burden of day-to-day decision making that your family must face. Everyone has concerns about the cost of medical care, and we know that you may be worried about how your child’s treatment costs will be paid.

Gift Shops

A variety of items are available in the St. Jude Gift Shop, located at the first floor entrance to the Patient Care Center.

Help for Communication Needs

You must be able to talk with and understand members of the St. Jude staff. If you have difficulty hearing or seeing, or if you understand or speak limited English, there are language interpreters that can help.

Hospital Van Schedule

Hospital shuttle vans are available at no cost to you to take you back and forth between St. Jude and the Ronald McDonald House, Target House, the Memphis Grizzlies House, or your hotel.

St. Jude is not equipped to secure your valuables, such as jewelry. A locked luggage room is available for your luggage.

No "Skating" on IV Poles

Please do not let your child use an IV pole like a skateboard or scooter.

No perfume, please!

Please remind your friends and family members that they should not wear perfume or cologne when they come to St. Jude. Many St. Jude patients are highly sensitive to odors and become easily nauseated.

School Program Parent Information

School is a normal part of childhood and keeping up with schoolwork can help children feel more normal as they battle cancer.

Cellular phones, courtesy phones, inpatient room phones, and translators are available to assist with your communication needs.

Think before You Speak

Please do not openly discuss the details of your child’s or other children’s illnesses in public places, such as the cafeteria, on elevators or in the hospital shuttles. If new parents or other listeners overhear the details of illnesses, the information could be upsetting to them and could violate patient confidentiality.

Transportation

St. Jude will pay for travel to St. Jude for the patient and one parent. Assistance must be requested in advance.

Use Clean Storage Containers

The use of cardboard shipping boxes for storing items in inpatient rooms is not permitted. Cardboard can harbor germs that can cause infections or allergies. Any storage container used should be cleaned often to prevent dust and germs from collecting.

St. Jude will provide lodging for the patient and one parent at the Ronald McDonald House, Target House, the Memphis Grizzlies House, or a local hotel, depending upon length of stay and availability.

Wigs

Wigs for Kids, a non-profit organization, assists children suffering from hair loss due to chemotherapy, burns and other medical circumstances by providing custom wigs.

Your Other Children

During your visit to St. Jude, we encourage you to leave other children at home if you can.
