Electron Microscopy (EM) provides the only method to observe biological entities measuring less than 0.5μm. Using the EM, it is possible to study proteins, macromolecules, bacteria and cell components either by themselves or cell-associated. The high resolution of EM also permits localization of proteins in viruses, bacteria, and cells using gold-conjugated antibodies.
The EM Services include: detection of viral, bacterial and mycoplasma contamination of tissue culture cells, estimation of purity of subcellular fractions, quantification of purified viruses and viral vectors, cellular localization of antigens by EM-Immunogold labeling, detection of nucleic acid and protein synthesis by radioautography, examination of the structure (linear or circular) and integrity of nucleic acids (eg. plasmids and viral vectors), and detection of ultrastructural changes in normal, malignant, and, virus-infected cells and tissues.
