In 1987, doctors discovered that 7-year-old Joel had a tumor in his right shoulder. The tumor, called osteosarcoma, had caused his shoulder to swell and had made tasks such as buckling a seat belt difficult. Upon discovering the tumor, Joel's doctor immediately sent him to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital. Joel underwent chemotherapy and an amputation to keep the cancer from spreading.

Now Joel works for the hospital that saved his life, helping share the stories of children like him who are valiantly fighting against cancer.
