New tax laws extend benefits of IRA rollover gifts

Great news for those interested in making an IRA rollover gift to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital—make your gift by January 31, 2013, and your donation will still count as a charitable gift for 2012.

On January 1, 2013, Congress passed the American Taxpayer Relief Act of 2012, which allows people age 70½ and older to make direct, tax-free gifts from an IRA to a qualified charity—tax free. The maximum amount for charitable distributions is $100,000.

Congress allows you two ways to make an IRA gift so that it will still count for 2012:

  1. You can make an IRA gift to St. Jude by January 31, 2013, and choose to count it as a charitable gift for 2012.
  2. If you took a distribution from your IRA in December 2012, you can send us a check by January 31, 2013, and elect on your tax return to count the December 2012 distribution as an IRA rollover.

To receive these tax benefits for new IRA rollover gifts, they must be directly transferred to St. Jude from the IRA account.
