Smith & Nephew, the global medical technology business that specializes in orthopedics, will be the new presenting sponsor for the St. Jude Classic, the PGA TOUR stop in Memphis, Tennessee, that benefits St. Jude Children's Research Hospital.
As a result, the 2010 event will be renamed the St. Jude Classic Presented by Smith & Nephew, and will unite two global healthcare organizations focused on restoring patients’ lives.
“We are extremely pleased that Smith & Nephew, a company that recognizes the positive impact the PGA TOUR’s Memphis tournament has had on the community, will serve as presenting sponsor of the St. Jude Classic,” said PGA TOUR Commissioner Tim Finchem. “Over the years, St. Jude has received tremendous support and exposure from the event, and Smith & Nephew’s commitment as presenting sponsor will help St. Jude provide lifesaving treatment to children with deadly diseases.”
“It is a privilege to be associated with this global force for the transformation of children’s lives,” said Dave Illingworth, chief executive officer for Smith & Nephew, Inc. “For more than 150 years, Smith & Nephew has worked to heal the human body, and the St. Jude Classic Presented by Smith & Nephew is a strong connector between us and the global power of St. Jude. Our 9,500 employees in nearly three dozen countries join me in recognizing the enduring value of this charitable institution.”
This year's event will take place June 7 - 13, 2010, at TPC Southwind and tickets are on sale now at www.stjudeclassic.com.
Some of the world's top golfers will be in Memphis for the 2010 event including three winners of golf’s major championships. David Toms, Justin Leonard and Retief Goosen have committed to play in the St. Jude Championship, June 7-13, at TPC Southwind. Both Toms and Leonard are two-time champions of the St. Jude Classic. They will be joined by defending champion Brian Gay, Rory McIlroy, Lee Westwood, Camilo Villegas, Zach Johnson, Padraig Harrington, Robert Allenby, Boo Weekly and John Daly.
“We are delighted to receive early commitments from these outstanding players who certainly need no introduction anywhere golf is played,” said Phil Cannon, tournament director of the SJC. “They’re established stars of the game and have distinguished themselves at the highest level both in national and international competition.”
St. Jude has been the sole beneficiary of the tournament since 1970 and to date has received more than $23.3 million from this event. Continuing that funding through the tournament is an important reason Smith & Nephew decided to become the new presenting sponsor, according to Joseph M. DeVivo, president of Smith & Nephew’s Memphis-based Orthopaedics division.
“Being headquartered in Memphis, we get to see firsthand the impact St. Jude has on the lives of children and their families,” DeVivo said. “Many of our employees have been touched by the St. Jude family, either through direct care or by involvement in their mission. It is an honor to associate our brands and to broadcast our shared message of restoration and healing.”
Added Richard C. Shadyac Jr., chief executive officer of ALSAC, the fundraising organization for St. Jude: "We are excited to have Smith & Nephew as the presenting sponsor of the St. Jude Classic, which has raised more than $23 million for the lifesaving research and treatment of St. Jude. Through the hard work of the tournament officials and the commitment of Smith & Nephew, this year’s St. Jude Classic will continue the tradition of a world-class event for fans, players, the kids of St. Jude and the city of Memphis."
