E Clinic

The Brain Tumor Team was formally established at St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital in 1985, when  the diagnosis of any type of a brain tumor was dismal. At that time, the only treatment options were limited to surgery and radiation therapy.

Since 1985 we have made tremendous strides. The discovery of new and better forms of chemotherapy has caused the prognosis for many types of childhood brain tumors to significantly improve. In 1985, the most common childhood brain tumor, medulloblastoma, was cured in less than 40 percent of cases. With the benefit of more technically aggressive neurosurgery, and the addition of a chemotherapy combination involving stem cell rescue that was pioneered here at St. Jude, more than 75 percent of children with medulloblastoma are now cured.

The Brain Tumor Program is one of the fastest growing programs at St. Jude. In 2008 alone, we saw more than 160 new patients. We anticipate even more new patients will come to St. Jude in the future, so we have expanded our services. Our brain tumor patients and medical team were given their own clinic in January 2004, and recently expanded to a larger new clinic July 2009.

The "E Clinic" is designated as the neuro-oncology clinic at St. Jude. Its staff includes the group of doctors, practitioners, and nurses that care for children with brain tumors. Our doctors are specially trained in chemotherapy as well as neurology, so they are able to address all the unique needs of brain tumor patients. Although the majority of these children receive radiation therapy at some point in their treatment course, E clinic remains their "primary clinic" from their first day at St. Jude, throughout therapy and later for follow-up visits.
