Teenagers from across the country spend their summers volunteering and exploring possible career paths as part of the St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital Volunteen Program. Participants, ages 16 to 18, plan fun-filled activities for patients and siblings and assist the Volunteer Services department in distributing crafts-and-activity items.
Many of the Volunteens are interested in pursuing careers in the medical field. The program is highly demanding, but immensely rewarding as teens work closely with patients and their siblings and parents.
Thirty applicants are accepted each year for the two-session program, with 15 teenagers serving during each of the monthlong sessions. Each teen completes an essay and application, which is then reviewed and scored by a committee.
