Several studies have demonstrated that the extent of resection is an independent positive prognostic factor for survival in patients regardless of the histology of the tumor. Thus in the current era most neurosurgeons strive to achieve a gross total resection of the tumor whenever possible. Our current operating room at Le Bonheur Children's Medical Center is equipped with state of the art instrumentation including an advanced operating microscope, laser and ultrasonic aspirator. A new feature that has recently been added to our equipment is a frameless stereotactic microscope that allows the surgeon to view a 3-dimensional map of the tumor superimposed on the surgical field. The systems computer screen provides key information that helps the surgeon identify tumor margins from surrounding normal brain tissue. We are developing this technology to remove tumors in areas of the brain where previously surgery would be difficult and leave the patient with severe neurologic deficits.
