acute lymphoblastic leukemia
A day after Katelyn participated in a Trike-A-Thon fundraiser for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, she woke with a fever and leg pain. Her mom, Michelle, took her to the doctor. “I thought Katelyn had a virus and that we’d get antibiotics and go home,” said Michelle. The doctor ordered blood work and when the results came in, he sent Katelyn to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital for further testing.
At St. Jude, doctors determined Katelyn suffered from acute lymphoblastic leukemia, the most common form of childhood cancer. She began a two-and-a-half year chemotherapy treatment plan. Katelyn’s cancer was soon in remission.
Parts of Katelyn’s treatment were tough. For awhile, she didn’t have the strength to ride her bike and she had trouble balancing. Her parents are impressed with how far Katelyn has come. “Katelyn is back riding her bike and she’s very active,” said Michelle.
Katelyn is now finished with treatment. She returns to St. Jude for regular checkups. Katelyn is fond of puzzles and loves to color and make crafts. She also likes to play soccer, and she and her sister can often be found on the soccer field together.
