Storing your medications correctly

We may all know the importance of taking medications correctly, but the proper storage of medicines is just as important. Medications can lose their potency and become less effective if they are exposed to moisture, heat or sunlight. So be sure to store medicine in a cool, dry place away from sunlight. Contrary to popular belief, a bathroom medicine cabinet is not a good place to store medications because of the warm and humid environment. Some other tips include:

  • Keeping all medications out of the reach of children.
  • Storing medicines in child-proof containers.
  • If a medication needs to be refrigerated, keeping it on the top shelf and out of sight from children.
  • Checking the expiration dates often, and discarding any medications that are out of date.

If you have questions about the proper storage of your medications, ask your doctor or pharmacist.
