World-renowned Brazilian artist Romero Britto will open the doors to his gallery on Wednesday, Feb. 16, and invite Miami residents to support St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.
The party will start at 6:30 at 818 Lincoln Rd and will feature 11-year-old St. Jude cancer survivor José Meléndez. The event is free to the public.
Britto’s work Miracles of the Seasons is featured in the St. Jude Patient Care Center (PCC) lobby. Britto donated the artwork to St. Jude when the new PCC opened in 1995. Since then Britto has continued to support the hospital, most recently by donating painting for auction at the St. Jude Night for the Children Gala in Monte Carlo, Monaco, and donating art to be featured in the St. Jude Hope Catalog.
The party will serve as the kick off for the third annual FedEx/St. Jude Angels & Stars Gala benefiting St. Jude, which will take place on Friday, April 1 at the J.W. Marriott Hotel in Miami, Florida.
Actress and model Daisy Fuentes will once again serve as the celebrity chair for the Angels & Stars Gala. Fuentes has been a St. Jude supporter since 1999, when she visited the hospital and saw the firsthand the work being done to save the lives of children.
“The one message I would like to get across to people is that you don’t have to close your eyes to what these children are facing. As tragic as it is to know that a child is suffering from a catastrophic disease, it’s very important to know about the research developed at St. Jude,” Fuentes said. “Once you see it, you realize that there is hope and that we need to do what we can to feed that hope. It’s just amazing to witness the mission of the hospital and to see the number of kids being saved from such devastating diseases.”
Floridians have shown their support for St. Jude, helping the Angels & Stars Gala raise more than $320,000 in the event’s two-year history.
“We are thrilled to have such great support from Romero Britto, Daisy Fuentes and the people of Florida,” said David L. McKee, Chief Operating Officer for ALSAC, the hospital’s fund-raising arm. “Their generous support ensures that the research continues at St. Jude as we strive to find cures for childhood catastrophic diseases.”
