"I dream of a land filled with candy, toys, fun and laughter." -- Adam, 4 years old |
They dream of being teachers, pilots, horse trainers and princesses. However, these seemingly simple childhood dreams are overshadowed with dreams of a cure for cancer, being a normal 13-year-old, and not having any more needle sticks. Even though patients at St. Jude Children's Research Hospital are battling life-threatening childhood diseases, they do not let those realities stand in the way of their dreams for the future. This year, as part of the 2007 Quilt of Dreams promotion, customers and employees of Hancock Fabrics had the opportunity to help make a child's dream come to life by creating a quilt based on their dreams.
Inspired by artwork drawn by children receiving treatments at the hospital, Hancock has designed 37 one-of-a-kind fabric patterns. Upon purchasing the fabric, participants were encouraged to create lap quilts. To help quilters design their original quilt of love, a list of dreams written by the children of St. Jude was provided in an information packet.
Over 2,000 quilts were donated to St. Jude through the 2006 promotion which brings us to more than 14,200 quilts received as a result of the Hancock Fabrics program. Quilts will be given to St. Jude patients and siblings and utilized for additional fund-raising purposes with all monies raised going to support the hospital's life-saving work.
