Year-end giving ideas for 2010
Like you, St. Jude Children's Research Hospital has faced another challenging year because of the economy. But thanks to your generous support and the support of other friends like you, we have been able to continue our work of finding cures and saving children. We hope you know how much all of us at St. Jude—the families, researchers, doctors, nurses and those working on their behalf—appreciate your support for our mission.
Many of our faithful donors ask us to remind them of ways to make an intended year-end gift to St. Jude. We want you to know that you may be able to enjoy valuable tax advantages and support St. Jude children and families by making your gift before the end of the year. One excellent way to do that is to give the gift of stock.
Give a gift of stock
Giving the gift of appreciated stock to St. Jude before December 31, 2010, offers several benefits:
- You avoid capital gains tax on the appreciated value.
- The amount of charitable income tax deduction is equal to the full fair-market value of the stock upon transfer.
- It is easy to do—simply provide your broker or financial advisor with the following wiring instructions.
Also, please fill out this transfer form or call us at 1-800-606-3308 at the time you make the transfer so we can properly acknowledge your gift for tax purposes.
Wiring Instructions: DTC ID #0226 for further credit to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital Account #003-314773 at First Tennessee Brokerage.
Tax Legislation Encourages Charitable Giving
A recent tax deal passed by Congress makes it even easier to give to charity. The law extends incentives for those 70½ years of age and older to make charitable gifts from what may otherwise be heavily taxed Individual Retirement Account (IRA) funds. To qualify, charitable gifts must be made directly from a traditional or Roth IRA.
People 70½ and older can channel up to $100,000 a year from IRAs tax-free to charities in 2011. Not only would such donations be tax-free for any gift made in 2010, but donors would also be allowed to make retirement account gifts through the end of January 2011 and still count them in their 2010 taxes. Check with your advisors about the best way to take advantage of this opportunity.
Give an insurance policy you no longer need to St. Jude
The needs for life insurance usually change over time, and some individuals find they no longer need a particular policy. You can give a paid-up policy or even a policy on which you are still paying premiums by irrevocably designating St. Jude as owner and beneficiary. You may then be entitled to a generous charitable income tax deduction. To make the change, simply call or write your insurance company and request that the appropriate form be mailed to you. The policy can then be changed to reflect the owner and beneficiary as: St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN, 38105, Tax Id #62-0646012.
