This past year has been one of the most challenging in our history because of the economy. But thanks to the generous support of friends like you, we have been able to continue our work of finding cures and saving children. I hope you know how much all of us at St. Jude Children's Research Hospital -- the families, researchers, doctors, nurses and those of us working on their behalf -- appreciate your support for our mission.
Many faithful donors like you ask us to remind them of useful ways they can make an intended year-end gift to St. Jude. We want you to know about the many ways you can support St. Jude children and families and enjoy valuable tax advantages by making your gift before the end of the year.
Time is running out on an opportunity for tax-free charitable giving offered by the Emergency Economic Stabilization Act (EESA) of 2008. Under the current law, the provision which allows those over 70 ½ to direct up to $100,000, from IRAs to charity expires on December 31. Be sure to act before then or you will have lost your chance for tax-free IRA gifts in 2009. Check with your advisor about the best ways to take advantage of this giving opportunity and how state and federal tax laws may affect your plans.
You may be able to enjoy significant tax benefits by making a gift of appreciated stock to St. Jude before December 31, 2009:
Wiring Instructions: DTC ID #0226 for further credit to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital Account #003-314773 at First Tennessee Brokerage.
However, if you want to donate depreciated stock, it is generally best to sell the assets first and then donate the proceeds to St. Jude. That way, you may be able to claim both a loss deduction from the sale and the charitable deduction on your taxes.
The needs for life insurance usually change over time, and some individuals find they no longer need a particular policy. You can give a paid-up policy or even a policy on which you are still paying premiums by irrevocably designating St. Jude as owner and beneficiary. You may then be entitled to a generous charitable income tax deduction. To make the change, simply call or write your insurance company and request that the appropriate form be mailed to you. The policy can then be changed to reflect the owner and beneficiary as: St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN, 38105, Tax Id #62-0646012.
If you would like to make a gift by credit card, please call 1-800-395-1087 to speak with a member of the Gift Planning staff. If you would like to send a gift by check, please mail to:
