St. Jude patient Patience joined Cedric "The Entertainer" and Niecy Nash on the set of their television show The Soul Man to create the public service announcement.

With her bright smile and colorful, sequined top, Patience looks more like a star-in-training than a patient undergoing treatment at St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. And that’s just fine with her.

In August 2013, Patience’s family learned she suffered from Hodgkin lymphoma, a cancer of the lymph system.

“I thought, ‘Lord, have mercy,’” said Patience’s mother, Joy. “My nerves were wrecked, but I had already prepared for it.” Patience began chemotherapy at St. Jude at the end of August.

"When you walk through the door at St. Jude for the first time, you’re almost in shock, but because everyone is warm and compassionate, it shakes you back to normal,” said Joy.

Families never receive a bill from St. Jude for treatment, travel, housing or food—because all a family should worry about is helping their child live. “It felt wonderful knowing that,” said Joy. “When you need treatment for something as serious as cancer, you don’t know what insurance will be willing to cover.”

Throughout treatment, Patience has kept her happy disposition. “She’s wonderful,” said Joy. “She loves to act silly. She loves to be a goof.”

Patience has big dreams for her future. “She loves to perform and act,” said Joy. “She wants to be the biggest star in the world.” She also enjoys reading and participating in school spelling bees.

On a recent afternoon, Patience had an experience that will help her toward her goal of becoming a star. She spent time with Cedric "The Entertainer" and Niecy Nash on the set of their television show The Soul Man. The two were preparing to film a PSA for St. Jude. Patience was thrilled to step in and help.
