Bluegrass CD celebrates lives of children fighting cancer

Some of the top names in bluegrass music have come together for their love of music and desire to end childhood cancer to create a new double CD-set to benefit St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.

The Celebration of Life CD features nearly 40 live tracks from bluegrass greats Tony Rice, Dan Tyminski, Rhonda Vincent & The Rage, The Grascals, Cherryholmes, Blue Highway, Doyle Lawson & Quicksilver, and J.D. Crowe & The New South. And best of all, all net proceeds from the sale of the CD will go to St. Jude, the world’s premier center for the research and treatment of cancer and other catastrophic childhood diseases. The CD is a production of the non-profit organization Musicians Against Childhood Cancer®  (M.A.C.C.) and Skaggs Family Records. The live songs were recorded during past M.A.C.C. festivals at Hoover Y-Park in Columbus, Ohio.

Celebration of Life was the brainchild of M.A.C.C. founder Darrel Adkins. For the past six years, Adkins and his wife Phyllis have devoted much of their time, helping to raise money for St. Jude through their efforts with M.A.C.C. and its annual bluegrass festival.

The Celebration of Life CD was inspired by my family and friends for many reasons,” said Adkins.  “For the love of music by talented musicians whose artistry should be shared and enjoyed by everyone; for finding cures to save children, so no child or their family should suffer; for the love of our daughter Mandy, who enjoyed celebrating life.”

After being diagnosed with a brain stem tumor, Adkins’ daughter, Mandy, was treated at St. Jude for eight months. Unfortunately, the cancer was too aggressive, and she lost her battle on November 25, 2000, at the age of 22. The M.A.C.C. festival was created in Mandy’s honor and to help continue the cutting-edge research and first-class treatment at St. Jude. This year’s M.A.C.C. festival will take place July 26-29, 2006, in Columbus, Ohio. For more information, please visit
