Endocrinology

The overall mission of the division of Endocrinology is to minimize endocrine side effects’ potential impact on quality of life of survivors of catastrophic disease.

Acute and chronic endocrine side effects are common with the evaluation and management of the catastrophic diseases of the St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital patient population. Patients may evolve new conditions through the years. The most frequently evaluated problems include: abnormal patterns of puberty and height growth, deficiencies of growth hormone, thyroid hormone, cortisol, vasopressin, sex hormones, and abnormal bone mineral metabolism. The results of endocrine evaluations are utilized by many treatment research protocols that continuously look for ways to decrease endocrine side effects.

Given an adequate understanding of their endocrine conditions, patients and families frequently serve as critically important extra eyes and ears in the evaluation and management of acute and chronic endocrine conditions. Endocrine conditions may have a myriad of interactions and responses to presently available non-investigational hormone therapies. The special long-term follow-up capability of the St. Jude patient population allows for opportunities to review and analyze meaningful outcome endpoints. Long-term follow-up often allows re-evaluation of previously incompletely characterized endocrine conditions and interventions. The endocrinology division extends St. Jude’s academic mission through sharing these clinical experiences through research publications, training residents and fellows, and ongoing relationships with colleagues.
