Some of Latin America’s brightest stars were on hand for the sixth annual FedEx/St. Jude Angels & Stars Gala which took place May 17 at the Adrienne Arsht Center for the Performing Arts of Miami-Dade County. This year’s event featured music by Jeremias, Luis Fonsi and Valeria Gastaldi. Additionally, Emilio and Gloria Estefan were honored for their commitment to international healthcare, the Miami community and their presence in the music and entertainment industry. This year’s Angels & Stars Gala raised $360,000 for the children of St. Jude.
Daisy Fuentes hosted the event, as she has since the inaugural Angels & Stars Gala in 2002. “I am delighted with the awareness our sponsors and other St. Jude supporters have brought to the fight against childhood cancer,” Fuentes said. “I can think of no better cause to support than the mission of St. Jude. Danny Thomas would be proud that South Florida and the Latin community are fighting hard to ensure his vision is kept alive.”
The evening’s festivities started with a cocktail reception and silent auction. Items up for bid included a shopping spree at Saks Fifth Avenue and dinner for 10 with Brazilian artist Romero Britto, a long-time St. Jude supporter. Following an elegant dinner, several St. Jude patients shared their inspiring stories with guests.
The Estefans were privileged to be honored by St. Jude. “We are especially grateful for the hospital’s lifesaving efforts throughout Latin America,” said Gloria Estefan. “The St. Jude international outreach program offers hope for sick children and their families, and they also share their medical knowledge with the doctors who treat these children in their hometowns and villages.”
ALSAC Chief Executive Officer John P. Moses attended the gala. “There are no words to describe how grateful we are for the generosity that the Hispanic community has shown to St. Jude,” he said. “We are especially thrilled to welcome Emilio and Gloria Estefan to our St. Jude family and congratulate them on this evening’s honor.”
Since 2002, FedEx has been the title sponsor of the Angel and Stars Gala. Julio C. Barrionuevo, vice president of finance, planning and engineering for Federal Express, Latin American & Caribbean, is the chair of the annual event. “FedEx is thrilled to have the Estefans join us in the critical partnership with St. Jude,” he said. “No place in the world does what St. Jude does for children stricken with leukemia and other cancers.”
Gala sponsors included FedEx Express, Stanford Financial Group, Universal Music Latino, Univision Radio, Telefonica, Lopez-Cantera Foundation, Merrill Lynch, Leon Medical Centers and The Miami Herald.
