Paishence loves to be outside. She likes climbing trees and playing in the dirt. This past spring, her right leg began to hurt, so her mother took her to the doctor, who said it was growing pains.
But when the discomfort continued, Paishence’s mom took her back to the doctor and asked him to look deeper. When tests revealed a mass on Paishence’s right femur, her doctor sent her to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.
Within a week, Paishence was found to suffer from osteosarcoma, a type of bone cancer.
At St. Jude, Paishence is undergoing chemotherapy. She will soon have limb-salvaging surgery, during which the affected bone will be removed and replaced with a prosthesis that can be adjusted as she grows.
“When I found out that Paishence had cancer, I worried about how we’d pay for her treatment, even with insurance,” said her mom. “But when I learned we’d never get a bill from St. Jude, I felt like I could breathe again.”
Paishence can’t play outside right now, but she enjoys writing, reading and doing arts and crafts. She’s also trying to learn how to play the guitar.
