Dee Herron
State Officer/Louisiana First Lady
Southern Cruisers Riding Club
Baton Rouge, Chapter 14
In her fifth year as a Cruisin’ for St. Jude coordinator, Dee Herron and the members of the Baton Rouge Chapter 14 Southern Cruisers Riding Club helped raise more than $40,000 in donations for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. In Aug. 2008, Herron’s chapter along with other Southern Cruiser chapters from around the country made their annual journey to the St. Jude event called “Cruisin’ for a Cure” to celebrate their year long fundraising efforts. Together, the Southern Cruisers chapters raised $220,000 for St. Jude in 2008.
The Baton Rouge fundraiser component of the “Cruisin’ for a Cure” event consists of a two-day festival highlighted with a silent auction, live bands, and of course, authentic Louisiana jambalaya. This fun-filled, family event is called “Rollin’ for Hope” and is headed up by State Officer and Cruiser coordinator Herron. With the help of many volunteers and other members in her Baton Rouge Chapter 14, the annual festival is an exercise in well-oiled teamwork.
“We have to rent the civic center; people have to volunteer time and talent; we have to line up the bands; we have to find someone to donate the food and all for the jambalaya,” Herron said, checking off the top items from a much longer list in her experience as the event’s coordinator. “It takes a good three months alone of meeting bi-weekly to keep everything focused, just to get ready for this Saturday and Sunday event we put on every year.”
But for Herron and other coordinators, it all comes down to the payoff – the enormous satisfaction of actually doing something good for so many children and families in need at St. Jude.
Throughout the year, Southern Cruiser chapters nationwide enjoy raising money for St. Jude through healthy competition that celebrates the camaraderie of riders around the world. For example, Herron explained the “50/50 contests” in which the winner of the contest – such as the ever-popular “Who Has the Most Bugs Stuck on Their Smiley-Face Headlight Sticker?” contest – receives 50 percent of the prize-winnings and donates the other 50 percent to St. Jude. But Herron confided with a smile that “most of the time, the winner gives 100 percent of their winnings to the St. Jude fund.”
Like Dee, event coordinators and volunteers share tips and ideas like the 50/50 contests to keep the sparks flying and the fire burning for St. Jude. They know that raising the bar with friendly competition not only burns off a little stress of planning a yearly event, but it strengthens those bonds of fellowship among one another, and it adds up quickly for the kids of St. Jude.
