Macy
Tennessee
12 years old
acute lymphoblastic leukemia
In early 2003, when Macy was 6 years old, she developed a virus and was listless and feverish. She was sweet and fun as always, but she didn’t seem completely herself. Macy’s mom, Melanie, took her to the doctor, but the trips yielded nothing unusual.
One day during T-ball practice, Macy complained her back hurt. Melanie took her back to the pediatrician, where blood work revealed devastating news: Macy suffered from acute lymphoblastic leukemia, the most common form of childhood cancer.
Macy’s doctor immediately sent her to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, where Macy started a two-and-a-half year treatment protocol that included several courses of chemotherapy. When her hair started to fall out, her mother and father shaved their heads in solidarity.
Today, Macy is cancer free and doing very well. She is in sixth grade and likes animals. She’s involved in lots of activities, including volleyball and St. Jude fundraisers. Macy has happy memories of St. Jude, and looks forward to her follow-up visits.
