Kayla, 8 years old, Tennessee, acute lymphoblastic leukemia
With a personality that bubbles over and a bright smile, Kayla makes friends with everyone she meets. When Kayla grows up, she wants to be a TV star. But right now, as an 8-year-old, she’s a cancer warrior.
At St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, Kayla is undergoing chemotherapy for acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL), the most common form of childhood cancer. St. Jude has increased the survival rate for ALL from 4 percent before the hospital opened in 1962 to 94 percent today.
In the hallways at St. Jude, Kayla knows everyone. She’ll stop to talk to nurses, sit down with her friends to do arts and crafts or, when the mood strikes, break into song and dance. When cancer tried to cross her, Kayla fought and won. To her family and friends, Kayla is already a star.
