| Description | When researchers at St. Jude and the University of Alberta discovered retinoic acid-inducible gene I (RIG-I) is absent in chickens, they conceived that generation of a transgenic chicken to express (RIG-I) may increase the chicken's resistance to influenza. They expressed duck RIG-I in chicken fibroblasts and saw a 50-70% decrease in influenza virus replication, including the highly pathogenic H5N1. In addition to influenza resistance, other benefits associated with such a transgenic chicken include an increase in the efficacy of vaccination and a decrease in influenza transmission, both within chickens and across species. |
