Raúl was an active, outgoing boy who loved playing baseball. But in March 2011, he began suffering from headaches and nausea. His mother, Karla, took him to the doctor in the family’s home country of Honduras, where he was prescribed medicine for a stomach ailment. Over the next several days, however, Raúl started to feel worse rather than better. At the local hospital, a CT scan revealed a mass on Raúl’s brain. Raúl was found to be suffering from medulloblastoma, a type of brain tumor. Surgeons were able to remove some, but not all, of the tumor. Raúl’s family researched the best treatment options for their son. That search led them to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, and they obtained a referral. At St. Jude, Raúl’s treatment will include radiation therapy and chemotherapy. His family is grateful for the care he’s received. “St. Jude is a piece of heaven on earth,” said Karla. When Raúl grows up, he wants to be a neurosurgeon so that he can help others.
