The city of Miami, Florida, showed its support on Oct. 24 for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, hosting the second annual FedEx/St. Jude Angels and Stars Gala raising more than $200,000 for the hospital.
Supermodel Daisy Fuentes served as the celebrity chair of the event. Fuentes has been a tremendous supporter of the hospital since 1997, visiting with patients in Memphis, attending the Hollywood Gala each year and participating in a variety of fund-raising activities. “Through the years, St. Jude has been recognized by its extraordinary work in the discovery of new treatments to fight cancer in our children, bringing life and hope to so many families, regardless of their ability to pay,” said Fuentes. “I am honored to support this event.”
The ceremony included live performances by latin pop sensation Jorge Moreno and singer/songwriter Soraya, a Colombian-American singer-songwriter, who recently returned to performing following her three-year battle with breast cancer. Ronnie Seikaly, former NBA star for the Miami Heat, was also in attendance.
The gala brought together the best of South Florida’s business and entertainment community in support of the hospital. A silent auction featuring original artwork from famed Brazilian artist Romero Britto and high-end travel packages raised more than $17,000.
Britto is also the artist who created the “Season of Miracles” painting that is prominently displayed in the lobby of the St. Jude Patient Care Center.
Gala sponsors include FedEx Express Latin American and Caribbean Division, The Miami Herald, El Nuevo Herald, Vanidades, Yahoo! en español, Oppenheimer & Co. Inc., KPMG, Cedars Medical Center, Bacardi U.S.A., Inc., Shaw Ross Importers, Gold Coast Beverage Distributors, Ernst & Young, Carlton Fields, Salud Plus, Cabi Developers and Turnberry Associates.
