Leukemias / Lymphomas : Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia
Advancements in treating acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) have led to a survival rate of about 8 out of every 10 children. Researchers continue to identify new information and develop better treatments. The treatments in this study are based on very specific scientific details of the individuals’ disease. The information about the individual disease will be used to determine the appropriate treatment. Participants will be placed into one of three groups based on the risk (low, standard or high) of their disease.
Other areas of interest will also be included in this research study. The researchers want to improve the survival of children with ALL and eliminate some of the undesired effects of treatment that occur long afterwards. The researchers will evaluate the participants’ genetic make up and compare it with the response to the drugs included in the treatment. The movement of the drugs within the body and the way they act within the body will be studied as well. Researchers hope to identify more biological factors among the participants that can improve the survival and quality of life for these children.
