Exciting finishes have become a hallmark of the annual FedEx St. Jude Classic in recent years and the 2012 version of the PGA TOUR event did not disappoint. Dustin Johnson, one week after returning from an early spring back injury, took sole possession of first place on the 71st hole, holding off world’s No. 2 ranked golfer Rory McIlroy and others to capture his sixth PGA TOUR title and become the 2012 FedEx St. Jude Classic champion.
But the FESJC is about more than golf. For more than 50 years, the event has been supporting St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital and its lifesaving work.
Championship Pro-Am teed off on time, featuring play from a number of celebrities including Tony Thomas, son of hospital founder Danny Thomas; Phil Donahue, Emmy® award-winning media personality, writer and film producer and husband of Marlo Thomas; and NBA stars Julius “Dr. J” Irving, Penny Hardaway, Mike Conley and Rick Barry.
A number of players also stopped by the St. Jude campus to play a little indoor golf at the Danny Thomas/ALSAC Pavilion with patients during the St. Jude Women’s Club Patient Golf-A-Round.
The FedEx partnership has been instrumental in helping to raise more than $25 million for St. Jude since 1970.
