Volunteens enjoy unique summer experience

Teenagers from around the country spend their summers volunteering and exploring possible career paths as part of the St. Jude Volunteen Program. The Volunteens, ages 16–18, plan a variety of fun-filled activities for patients and siblings and assist the Volunteer Services department in the distribution of Happy Cart crafts and activity items.

Many Volunteens are interested in pursuing careers in the medical field. The Volunteen Program is highly demanding, as each teen works closely with patients, siblings and parents.

Thirty applicants are accepted each year for the two-session program, with 15 teenagers serving during each of the monthlong sessions. The program attracts many applicants each summer. Each teenager must complete an essay and application, which is then reviewed and scored by a committee.
