Elsie Gerhardt

Administrative Specialist, Infectious Diseases-IOP

Elsie is a graduate of Wellesley College in Massachusetts, where she double-majored in political science and Latin American studies. She earned her master of arts degree in international relations at the University of Kent at Canterbury, in the United Kingdom. Her professional background includes working as a public relations officer at Banco Popular, Puerto Rico’s leading financial institution; business journalist for the San Juan Star, Puerto Rico’s only English-language daily at the time; and account executive in multinational advertising agencies McCann-Erickson and Foote, Cone and Belding in her native Puerto Rico. She relocated to Memphis with her family in 2004.

As administrative specialist to Infectious Diseases-International Outreach Division director Miguela Caniza, MD, Elsie conducts budgeting and financial transactions, and manages contracts. Additionally, she serves as translator, editor and assistant in research studies, and the Infectious Diseases-International Outreach Division newsletter, a bimonthly publication reaching Latin America-based Infectious Diseases professionals. She is currently pursuing a master’s degree in public health at the University of Memphis to better serve the mission of best care and prevention of infections in children with cancer worldwide.
