Golfer David Toms celebrates his second consecutive
victory in the FedEx St. Jude Classic.
David Toms successfully defended his FedEx St. Jude Classic champion title on May 30, earning a spot in the tournament's history books.
Toms became the fourth player along with Dave Hill (4), Lee Trevino (3) and Nick Price (2) as the only multiple winners of the FESJC. He was just the third player to win two consecutive titles along with Hill (1969 and 1970) and Trevino (1971 and 1972).
"Lee Trevino was one of the first pros I ever played with. When I was 18, we had a little exhibition in Shreveport, so to follow in his footsteps is really special," Toms said afterward.
As the final round began, Toms led Vaughn Taylor by seven shots who would finish tied for fifth with Fredrik Jacobson, Stewart Cink and Brian Gray. The 2001 FESJC champion, Bob Estes tried to rally with a late surge, but Toms was able to cruise to victory by six strokes, shooting 268. Estes finished with a 274.
The final round of play proved challenging as players struggled against strong winds and ominous weather conditions that forced earlier tee times to assure a mid-afternoon finish.
Before the tournament began, pro golfer and Memphian Loren Roberts visited St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, the event's beneficiary, to play miniature golf with some of the patients and to sign autographs.
"We are very appreciative of the continued success of the FESJC and the involvement of players such as Loren Roberts," said Richard C. Shadyac, national executive director of ALSAC, the hospital's fund-raising arm. "The tournament's affiliation with St. Jude stretches back to before the hospital was even opened and we are very thankful for all their efforts in helping St. Jude to continue its quest to eradicate childhood cancer. "
St. Jude Children's Research Hospital has been the sole beneficiary of this PGA tournament since 1970. Over the years, the tournament has raised more than $14 million for St. Jude, most of which has been raised since FedEx's title sponsorship in 1986.
