On Sunday, February 4, 1962, St. Jude founder Danny Thomas unveiled a statue of St. Jude Thaddeus to formally celebrate the opening of St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. The statue still stands outside the entrance to the Patient Care Center.
In the 49 years since opening its doors, St. Jude has grown from a solitary, star-shaped building into a world-class pediatric cancer research hospital that encompasses 66 acres. With structures that have become a part of the Memphis skyline, St. Jude has expanded to carry out Danny’s dream that “no child should die in the dawn of life.”
