Infectious Diseases Initiative - International Outreach Program (ID-IOP)

The mission of the Infectious Diseases – International Outreach (ID-IO) Program at St. Jude Children's Research Hospital is to increase the rate of survival of children with infectious diseases worldwide by collaborating with local healthcare professionals in international sites to enable them to acquire the knowledge, technology and organizational skills necessary to prevent and minimize the consequences of infectious disease in children. The main tools the ID-IO Program uses to fulfill its mission are the education and training of international healthcare professionals in the diagnosis, prevention and management of infectious diseases.

In the long term, the ID-IO Program aims (1) to establish and maintain a network of Infectious Disease specialists and institutions that will facilitate ongoing education in infectious diseases worldwide and the continuous exchange of knowledge and expertise in infectious diseases between St. Jude and its international partners, and (2) to foster international collaborative research on basic and clinical aspects of infectious diseases.

The ID-IO Program offers the following short-term fellowship programs to interested professionals from international sites:

  1. Management of pediatric and adolescent infections in the immunocompromised host, including patients with cancer or HIV/AIDS.
  2. Prevention of infection.

At international sites, the ID-IO Program supports ongoing formal training of healthcare providers in HIV/AIDS and in infection control in collaboration with local educational centers and health institutions. Examples include HIV/AIDS training for nurses in El Salvador and infection control training for Latin American nurses in El Salvador.
