Administrative Director, International Outreach Program
George Vélez is the Administrative Director for the International Outreach Program. Recognizing the positive impact of International Outreach on the survival rates of children with cancer in countries with limited resources, Mr. Vélez provides leadership, healthcare management and administrative oversight to a myriad of international health programs with an emphasis on use of advanced telecommunication technologies to facilitate “real-time” medical consultations and increased healthcare education and training at international sites around the world.
Vélez was born in Brooklyn, New York City. He relocated to Puerto Rico as a child where he graduated from Manuel Mendez Liciaga High School, in San Sebastián, Puerto Rico. Previous to his current role with St. Jude, Mr. Vélez dedicated twenty faithful and meritorious years of military service with the United States Air Force Medical Service as a Healthcare Administrator. Vélez completed an Associates Degree in Allied Health Sciences from the Community College of the Air Force. He is a graduate of The Ohio State University where he completed a Bachelor of Arts. He is also a graduate of Baldwin Wallace University, Berea, Ohio where he completed a Masters of Business Administration in Executive Healthcare Management.
Currently, Vélez is a doctoral candidate in Healthcare Administration with Central Michigan University. His dissertation will present a case study of factors contributing to the success of the pediatric cancer program in Guatemala City, Guatemala. He anticipates the doctoral defense in Fall of 2014. Vélez is also a certified healthcare executive and a Fellow of the American Academy of Medical Administrators.
Vélez is very active in his community. He serves as a volunteer for several non-profit organizations including Special Olympics, Habitat for Humanity, The Hispanic United Fund and serves as a Board Trustee of the Alpha & Omega Veteran’s Services in Memphis, Tennessee.
