Dr. Joseph Simone served as the third director and CEO of St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital from 1983 to 1992. He joined the hospital in 1967 as a faculty physician. Simone chaired the Department of Hematology and later served as associate director for Clinical Research before being appointed hospital director in 1983. He appointed nine department chairs during his tenure, including those in Tumor Cell Biology, Immunology, Virology, Molecular Pharmacology and Genetics. He also brought scientific attention to St. Jude by entering the Pediatric Oncology Group in 1981 and later paved the way for St. Jude to be a charter member of the National Comprehensive Cancer Network.
Simone served as medical director and chair of the National Comprehensive Cancer Network, as president of the Association of American Cancer Institutes and as vice chair of the Pediatric Oncology Group. A recipient of the American Association for Cancer Research’s Richard and Hinda Rosenthal Foundation Award, Simone was also a member of the National Cancer Institute’s Board of Scientific Advisors.
