A fellowship in bone marrow transplantation and cellular therapy is offered to individuals who have completed a fellowship in pediatric hematology-oncology. This one-year fellowship is not ACGME approved.
The transplant fellowship at St. Jude has been in existence since 1996. The goal is to train physicians to be competent in the use of transplantation and cellular therapy for the treatment of malignant or non-malignant diseases. Specifically, our program trains physicians in indications for transplant, pre-transplant patient evaluation, identification and selection of stem cell sources, use of donor registries, methodologies of HLA typing, marrow cryopreservation, management of ABO incapable cell products, administration of high-dose chemotherapy, management of neutropenic fever, management of bacterial/viral/fungal diseases in immunocompromised patients, management of bleeding diathesis, diagnosis and management of regimen related toxicities including veno-occlusive disease of the liver, interstitial pneumonia, hemorrhagic cystitis, management of nausea and pain, diagnosis and management of acute and chronic graft-versus-host disease, late complications of marrow transplantation, terminal care, as well as training in documentation and reporting for patients being treated on investigational trials.
Trainees gain experience in bone marrow harvest; stem cell aphereses; skin biopsies; stem cell product infusions as well as advanced cell processing techniques. Our trainees receive a broad based education in both transplant medicine and biotechnology because our center performs large numbers of transplants and cellular therapies using various products such as bone marrow, blood stem cells, cord blood, haploidentical grafts, NK cells, gene-modified therapeutic cells, and mesenchymal cells.
The typical schedule includes five months on the inpatient service, four months on the outpatient service, one month in Immunophenotyping Laboratory/Blood Bank/Donor Room, one month in the Human Applications laboratory, and the remainder of time in electives. Trainees are encouraged to participate in protocol design and development and to complete a clinical research project related to transplantation during the course of their training.
