Volunteen Kara Skjoldager admires Chester Norsworthy's Spider-man mask and personalized cape.
They had out their markers, crayons, white pillow cases and big smiles on their faces. The Volunteens at St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital hosted “Super Hero Day” for the patients—helping them create their own capes and design their own masks.
The St. Jude Volunteen program enables teens to explore career paths and develop leadership and team-building skills while helping children. Each year, the highly competitive program seeks 30 participants between the ages of 16 and 18 with strong character and high spirits. Each applicant must write an essay as part of the stringent application process.
While many of the Volunteen projects include arts-and-crafts or game themes, participants also assist other hospital volunteers with story time or with the Happy Cart—a game distribution system on wheels—while increasing their self-awareness and interacting with a diverse population of people.
