AOL is making it easier for patient and families of St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital to stay connected.
On April 7, Senior Vice President of AOL Technologies David Cole and 15 AOL team members presented 20 mobile laptop carts to St. Jude, which will be known as the AOL Connections Lab. The mobile carts will fit conveniently over hospital beds and wheelchairs, and provide an easy and convenient way for children and their families to stay in touch with family and friends while inpatient at St. Jude. The laptops are customized with a full suite of AOL products including AOL Mail and AOL Instant Messenger. The computers were donated to the St. Jude Child Life department.
“We are so thankful to AOL for this generous gift,” said David L. McKee, chief operating officer and interim CEO of ALSAC, the fundraising organization of St. Jude. “AOL has been a dedicated St. Jude partner, and we appreciate the company’s continued support of our patients and families through the AOL Connections Lab.”
To celebrate the gift, Cole and the AOL team members were joined by St. Jude patient Abby in clicking a four-foot computer mouse to officially open the AOL Connections Lab. Following the celebration, AOL treated patients, family members and staff to a free screening of Hotel for Dogs, a movie distributed by Dreamworks Pictures and Nickelodeon Movies starring Emma Roberts, Jake T. Austin, Lisa Kudrow, Kevin Dillon and Don Cheadle.
“AOL is proud to support the work of St. Jude, one of the world’s premier pediatric cancer research centers,” Cole said. “Our company put America online, and through the AOL Connections Lab, we’re now able to help children and parents get online and stay in touch with friends and loved ones while they are at the hospital.”
AOL recently announced the success of its involvement in the 2008 Thanks and Giving® campaign, an annual national awareness and fundraising initiative for St. Jude that runs throughout the holiday season. AOL contributed a total of $1.5 million to St. Jude in donations from AOL users, AOL employees, company matching grants, as well as in-kind promotions and ads on the AOL network.
