The 51st annual AutoZone Liberty Bowl was a crowd-pleaser again for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. Each year, players and coaches from both teams visit St. Jude to spread holiday cheer to patients and their families. This year’s Liberty Bowl-bound teams, the East Carolina University Pirates and the University of Arkansas Razorbacks, toured St. Jude before the big game. During the Dec. 30 and Dec. 31 visits of the teams, patients enjoyed talking about football and getting autographs from the players. On Jan.1, Miss AutoZone Liberty Bowl 2009, Jaime Elizabeth Horne, and many members of her court from around the country came together to visit and tour the hospital, and to wish everyone a happy New Year.
The AutoZone Liberty Bowl was played on Jan. 2, at Memphis’ Liberty Bowl stadium, to a sell-out crowd of 62,742 bundled up but cheering fans. Singer Eddie Money also braved the freezing temperatures of game-day to perform at the halftime show. The Arkansas Razorbacks won over the East Carolina Pirates in overtime with a final score of 20-17.
