This year, more than 200 representatives from Spanish-language radio and television gathered in Memphis for the 13th annual Promesa y Esperanza(Promise and Hope) Radiothon Training Seminar. Among the major Spanish-language media represented at the seminar were Univision, Telemundo and Veintiseven magazine.
During the three-day event, VIPs, visiting artists Beto Cuevas and Christian Chavez and many welcomed guests had the opportunity to visit the hospital, meet with St. Jude doctors and researchers to see firsthand what their hard work has helped to accomplish. Other special guests touring the hospital for the first time were Michelle Hohman, Vice President/General Manager for Univision Radio Los Angeles, Angela Navararrete, Vice President/General Manager for Univision Radio Fresno, and Tony Perlongo, General Manager for Univision Radio San Francisco. Special training sessions provided the opportunity for radio talent and personnel to learn about developing and implementing successful radiothons and allowed radio professionals to exchange ideas and share their past experiences. One of the highlights of the event was the popular “Meet the Patients” session where guests gathered to hear touching stories from Hispanic patients and their families currently in treatment at St. Jude.
Promesa y Esperanza was launched in 1997 and has become one of the most successful radio fundraising campaigns in the U.S. Hispanic market. With 110 stations in more than 65 radio markets, the program has raised much needed funds for the children of St. Jude. During the two-day radiothons, stations use the airwaves to encourage listeners to become “Angeles de Esperanza” by donating just $20 a month to the children of St. Jude.
