International Visitors Program
The purpose of the International Visitors Program (IVP) is to provide specific training at St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital to selected visiting international healthcare professionals to fulfill a stated need of their home institution. The IVP provides an opportunity for these visitors to observe the St. Jude model of holistic medicine, which is based on the delivery by a multidisciplinary team of care for children with cancer and other catastrophic diseases. Since the program’s inception in 1993, more than 100 countries from around the world have been represented in the IVP. Our international visitors traditionally specialize in the following healthcare professions:
- Physician Oncologists/Hematologists
- Infectious Disease Physicians
- Surgeons
- Nurses
- Social Workers
- Psychologists/Psychiatrists
- Nutritionists
- Pharmacists
- Dentists
- Pathologists
- Medical Laboratory Professionals
- Physical Therapists
The IVP was specifically designed to provide a brief (2-6 weeks) exposure to targeted clinical programs at St. Jude. The Executive Committee of the International Outreach Program meets in January and July of each year to consider applications for participation in the program. The following criteria are used for the selection of participants:
- The applicant has not been to St. Jude on a previous fellowship or IVP visit (or if the applicant has been here previously, a special review will be given by an ad hoc committee).
- The applicant must be a directly associated specialist working in a pediatric cancer center.
- The applicant should come from a country with limited resources.
- The applicant should be fluent in English.
- The committee will accept no more than two applicants per country per year.
- When all other criteria are met, applicants are accepted on a "first-come, first-serve" basis.
