St. Jude scored a big win at the Regions Morgan Keegan Championships and the Cellular South Cup Feb. 13-20. Players from all over the world came to Memphis for a chance at a men’s, women’s or doubles’ title, but they also helped raise funds and awareness for St. Jude.

Denmark’s Kenneth Carlsen won his third ATP Tour title in his 13-year career. Carlsen defeated No. 8 seed Max Mirnyi of Belarus to take the Regions Morgan Keegan Title. On the women’s side, Vera Zvonareva defended her Cellular South Cup title, beating No. 3 seed Meghann Shaughnessy. In men’s doubles, Simon Aspelin and Todd Perry defeated Bob and Mike Bryan. Miho Saeki and Yuka Yoshida won the women’s doubles event, beating No. 3 seeds Laura Granville and Abigail Spears.

During tournament week, a number of players, including top seed Andy Roddick, came to the hospital to visit patients and sign autographs.

Since 1993, St. Jude has been the beneficiary of the tennis tournament. This year’s tournament raised $176,808 that will go toward an endowment fund at St. Jude in memory of Tim Gullikson, a former tour player who died of brain tumors in 1996. Previously, the tournament has endowed the Arthur Ashe Chair for Pediatric AIDS Research at St. Jude.
