Donors write to the patients of St. Jude

Hero cards offer encouragement to children fighting cancer

St. Jude Hero cards

As part of a special March mailing, St. Jude donors were invited to send words of support to the patients of St. Jude. Donors received a letter from Marlo Thomas asking them to write personal words of encouragement on an enclosed "Hero" card to help lift the spirits of a child battling cancer. Thousands of Hero cards flooded St. Jude's mail box with inspirational messages like these:

"My husband and you have a lot in common. Right now he is in Iraq fighting a war. He has very bad days and he even cries sometimes. But he is a strong soldier, just like you. You both are fighting a war and we will overcome this. He is my hero and so are you for being so strong and so brave. Everything will work out like it is supposed to."

Tonya West, St. Jude donor

"I was a firefighter for 30 years and nothing I did was as brave as what you are doing. Keep up the good fight! My prayers for your success."

James Bonsper, St. Jude donor

Some of the cards were displayed on a hospital bulletin board, and placed at various sites in the hospital for patients and their families to read. The love, support and prayers from St. Jude donors were very touching and inspirational to many of the families. The mother of 1-year-old Alethea McIlrath said, "It is such a blessing to know that people are making a difference in the lives of these kids." And the grandmother of 5-year-old patient Tori Niccum said, "These cards are uplifting. I think when the kids see these, it makes them feel better. It helps them be positive."

On behalf of the children of St. Jude, we offer our sincerest thanks to all the caring St. Jude donors who sent cards. Your love and support means the world to our children and their families. Thank you for being their heroes.
