St. Jude recognizes the incredible importance of training the next generation of biomedical investigators to be supremely knowledgeable, creative and curious, excited, and enthusiastic about their work. The seminal discoveries needed to provide major advances in the understanding of catastrophic diseases of children will come from these new trainees. Recognizing this responsibility, the Office of Academic Programs has been expanded recently to provide trainees the support services to guarantee a superior experience at St. Jude and that they are well prepared to find a quality position in the workplace. It is the goal of St. Jude and the Academic Programs Office to be recognized for the superior quality of its trainees with respect to biomedical research skills with their preparation for success in the workplace.
The nine faculty and staff members in Academic Programs have extensive experience working with students and trainees. Many services are provided to the trainee from the time contact is first made with the institution to comprehensive individual relocation assistance including support for family members. During their years at St. Jude, fellows will find a large lounge exclusively for their use, an annual fellowship retreat, monthly social events, opportunities to participate in poster sessions and to present their work, skill and career development workshops, counseling services, and the highly successful Cancer Biology Forum. This lecture series is designed to provide all trainees with comprehensive and current information about the biology of cancer. On a regular basis, guest speakers provide information to trainees about career opportunities in academia, the pharmaceutical industry, publications, government, technology licensing, etc.
The office also works with the Postdoctoral Council and the Graduate Student Council to support new and creative programs and with the institution's Postdoctoral Advisory Committee, the Clinical CME/GME Committee, and the Graduate Student Committee.
We very much look forward to the possibility of welcoming you to one of the many St. Jude training programs! Our training programs have a long and successful history, and we are committed to helping you.
