An Association of the Postdoctoral Fellows at St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital was formed in 1998 to facilitate communication between the postdoctoral community and the administration of St. Jude as well as enhancing the postdoctoral experience. It provides a collective, representative voice for the issues of direct relevance or interest for all basic science and clinical postdoctoral fellows at St. Jude. The Association provides a liaison between St. Jude postdoctoral associates, the faculty and the administration of St. Jude and provides representation of postdoctoral fellows on institutional committees in order to maintain the best interests of St. Jude postdoctoral fellows.
The Postdoctoral Association provides career development and maintains an intranet site of pertinent information for St. Jude postdoctoral associates. It also provides opportunities for postdoctoral fellows to work with St. Jude and the Memphis community in volunteer activities.
Each person presently involved in postdoctoral research at St. Jude, both basic science and clinical, is considered an active member of the Postdoctoral Association. Membership starts upon official appointment as a postdoctoral or clinical fellow and continues until termination or reclassification of the person’s position. There are no fees associated with this membership.
Any member of the Postdoctoral Association may join the Association Council.
Members of the Association Council act as spokespersons, representatives and advocates for the Postdoctoral Association. The Council is responsible for the administration of the affairs of the Association and is accountable to the membership of the Association. The Council is comprised of individuals presently in postdoctoral positions at St. Jude and number up to 10 percent of the total postdoctoral population.
Postdoctoral fellows at St. Jude are encouraged to be involved in the Association Council. It is an excellent setting to develop essential skills in working with others and the St. Jude administration. Together with Academic Programs, the Council strives to enhance the postdoctoral experience at St. Jude on every level, from career development, to funding opportunities, to social activities.
