Oncology

The overall mission of the Oncology Department is to improve cure rates for children with cancer while reducing the acute and late effects of therapy through a coordinated program of clinical research, patient care and education. Recent gains have been seen in the long-term outcome for two of the most frequent forms of childhood cancer (a 90 percent survival rate for acute lymphoblastic leukemia and for non-Hodgkin lymphoma.)

Oncology faculty provide essential clinical expertise in the hospital’s International Outreach Program. They are also involved in virtually all programs of the Cancer Center including efforts to improve the use of antimetabolite compounds in cancer patients, evaluate camptothecin analogs (topoisomerase 1 inhibitors), and identify and delineate the clinical significance of new genetic abnormalities of cancer cells. The Oncology Department strives for a stronger laboratory-based research focus and the realization of its ultimate goal: to provide curative therapy to every child who has a catastrophic disease.

The Department of Oncology is chaired by Ching-Hon Pui, MD, and co-chaired by Amar Gajjar, MD.
